OUR NATURAL SELF

“I wish I had the same intelligence as the day I was born”. ~H.D.Thoreau

I would like to refer to the right brain as the home of our natural self in contrast to the social self of the left brain…I realize the limitations of using the word “natural” but know of no other word which connotes as many associations capturing the qualities of the right brain…the reason we are not more aware of our natural self is because of our hypnotic obsession and addiction with the chatter of the egotistical social self…like any addiction we can let go of this habit only when it has become unbearable and thereby overriding the fear of losing this artificial and compulsive identity.

“Opportunities to find deeper powers within ourselves come when life seems most challenging…the big question is whether you are going to be able to say a hearty yes to your adventure…we must be willing to get rid of the life we’ve planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us…we’re so engaged in doing things to achieve purposes of outer value that we forget the inner value.”~ Joseph Campbell

It is commonly believed if we are able to leave the ego behind, we will be faced with deep existential emptiness and meaningless feelings…fortunately, this is only another illusion of our threatening ego that simply does not hold true in reality…for most of all, natural intelligence is a continuous creative flow also occurring within the right brain…everyone has creative talents largely ignored by the ego as being worthless in the social world.

Once our attention is focused on the creative right brain it becomes easier to see our special talents often found right in front of our nose…bonding with this energy offers a new identity much more authentic than the one of our artificial ego and if passionately pursued becomes the meaning of our life.

“What each must seek in his life is something out of our own unique potentiality for experience, something that never has been and never could have been experienced by anyone else… your sacred space is where you can find yourself again and again.”~ Joseph Campbell
