INTUITIVE SCIENCE

Science now presents us with a whole collection of counter-rational ideas…such as time runs slower when you move very fast, that atomic particles can be in two places at once, that the shortest distance between two points is really a curve…the limits of rational thinking are undermining our beliefs about what is true.

Niels Bohr, a major contributor of quantum theory describes its counter-rational idea, “those who are not shocked when they first come across quantum theory cannot possibly have understood it”…he reacts to colleagues ideas, “your theory is crazy…but not crazy enough to be true.” and “no, no, you’re not thinking; you’re just being logical.” Albert Einstein made similar comments, “if at first, the idea is not absurd, then there is no hope for it”.

Albert Einstein is very critical of children’s rationally oriented education…he states “the only thing that interferes with my learning is my education” and “it is a miracle that curiosity survives formal education”…also cynically adds, “education is what remains after one has forgotten everything they learned in school”….Robert Oppenheimer famous nuclear scientist was aware of losing a gift of childhood, “there are children playing in the streets who could solve some of my top problems in physics, because they have modes of sensory perception that I lost long ago.”

But it is Albert Einstein who describes the importance of the intuitive mind and its imagination…he states, “intuition is the only valuable thing” and “imagination is more important than knowledge”…plus his most famous quote, “the intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.”
