ILLUSION OF SEPARATION

“Losing an illusion makes you wiser than finding a truth.” ~Ludwig Börne

Our five senses of sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell can not detect the infinite other types of forms that exist around us….and we are unable to fully sense its interrelationships but instead our senses create the illusion of separation since we are unable to perceive the connections between everything else.

Most importantly we see our self as separate from others including the environment….the illusion of a separate self creates the illusion of time having a separate past and future…and this leads to the belief we have a separate and personal life story…all of which occurs because we are unable to perceive the infinite connections making up the interrelated environment.

However if we are able to see through any one of these illusions all the others collapse…hence if we become free from the illusion of a separate self, there is no longer a need for linear time with its separate past and future…and this also ends the illusion of having a separate personal story…breaking any one of these chains frees us from the trap of separateness.

Our separate personal story is perhaps the most interesting illusion because of our failure to see its relationship with the larger “social story”…all our beliefs and values were simply past down to us from the social environment…it includes the contradictory belief we have a separate personal story for which we are responsible and expected to make every effort to fulfill the goals of this social story…it becomes our only identity and if we fail, we are judged as undesirable.

It takes a very challenging life experience to finally free our self from our personal story and dramatically discover deeper intuitive feelings for the meaning of life…we are then free from our preoccupation with the past and future…along with the judgements of a separate self.

“Opportunities to find deeper powers within ourselves come when life seems most challenging.” ~Joseph Campbell
